1(1-3) इनमें संबोधित तो नबी (सल्लल्लाहु अलैहि व सल्लम) को किया गया है, परंतु आपके माध्यम से पूरे मुसलमानों के लिए संबोधन है। शरण माँगने के लिए तीन बातें ज़रूरी हैं : (1) शरण माँगाना। (2) जो शरण माँगता हो। (3) जिसके भय से शरण माँगी जाती हो और अपने को उससे बचाने के लिए दूसरे की सुरक्षा और शरण में जाना चाहता हो। फिर शरण वही माँगता है, जो यह सोचता है कि वह स्वयं अपनी रक्षा नहीं कर सकता। और अपनी रक्षा के लिए वह ऐसे व्यक्ति या अस्तित्व की शरण लेता है जिसके बारे में उसका विश्वास होता है कि वह उसकी रक्षा कर सकता है। अब स्वभाविक नियमानुसार इस संसार में सुरक्षा किसी वस्तु या व्यक्ति से प्राप्त की जाती है, जैसे धूप से बचने के लिये पेड़ या भवन आदि की। परंतु एक खतरा वह भी होता है जिससे रक्षा के लिए किसी अनदेखी शक्ति से शरण माँगी जाती है, जो इस विश्व पर राज करती है। और वह उसकी रक्षा अवश्य कर सकती है। यही दूसरे प्रकार की शरण है, जो इन दोनों सूरतों में अभिप्रेत है। और क़ुरआन में जहाँ भी अल्लाह की शरण लेने की चर्चा है उसका अर्थ यही विशेष प्रकार की शरण है। और यह तौह़ीद पर विश्वास का अंश है। ऐसे ही शरण के लिए विश्वासहीन देवी-देवताओं इत्यादि को पुकारना शिर्क और घोर पापा है।
