1अबू लहब का अर्थ शोला वाला है। वह अति सुंदर और गोरा था। उसका नाम वास्तव में 'अब्दुल उज़्ज़ा' था, अर्थात उज़्ज़ा का भक्त और दास। 'उज़्ज़ा' उनकी एक देवी का नाम था। परंतु वह अबू लहब के नाम से जाना जाता था। इसलिए क़ुरआन ने उसका यही नाम प्रयोग किया है और इसमें उसके नरक की ज्वाला में पड़ने का संकेत भी है।

2「一番近い親族に警告せよ」というアーヤ*（詩人たち章21４）が下った後、預言者*ムハンマド*はサファーの丘に登り、アッラー*からの命令通り、クライシュ族*を集めて「本当に私は厳しい懲罰に先立つ、あなた方への警告者である」（サバア章４６も参照 ）と呼びかけた。それに対し、アブー・ラハブ*が「お前に破滅あれ。こんなことのために私たちを集めたのか？」と言ったことに対し、このスーラ*が下ったとされる（アル＝ブハーリー４９７1参照）。

1(V.111:1) Narrated Ibn ‘Abbâs رضي الله عنهما : "When the Verse, ‘And warn your tribe (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of near kindred.’ (V.26:214) was revealed, Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم went out, and when he had ascended As-Safâ mountain, he shouted, ‘Yâ Sabâhâh !’* The people said, ‘What is that?’ Then they gathered around him, whereupon he said, ‘Do you see? If I inform you that cavalrymen are proceeding up the side of this mountain, will you believe me?’ They said, ‘We have never heard you telling a lie.’ Then he said, ‘I am a plain warner to you of a coming severe punishment.’ Abû Lahab said, ‘May you perish! You gathered us only for this reason?’ Then Abu Lahab went away. So [Sûrat Al-Masad] ‘Perish the hands of Abu Lahab!’ was revealed. (V.111:1). (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 6, Hadith No.495).
